At work: With a focus of meeting the Army’s mission requirements and supporting soldier readiness, I lead and provide oversight to a federal contracting division that procures complex services and essential supplies.

Home and family: I am married to my handsome husband, Jobarie, and am a mother to our adorable son.

Volunteer activities: I find enjoyment reaching back into the community by offering free consultation, resume and interview preparation services. I also am a member of the Lambda Gamma Omega Virginia Beach chapter of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, the Virginia Beach Pearls Foundation, and Emmanuel True Holiness Church. I also enjoy helping the community to increase health and financial awareness, and participating in food drives.

Motivating factor: The capability to conquer accomplishments motivates me to take on new challenges and believe that NOTHING is impossible.

Advice for young people: Don’t be afraid to network for mentorship and new opportunities.

Professional goal in five years: I would like to a director of a federal contracting command while positively impacting the lives of others.

The one thing I’d change about Hampton Roads: I would like to see the cities of Hampton Roads work together to increase expand The Tide light rail, and to host an NFL or NBA team.

Region’s biggest asset: Diversity of our population and the immense amount of talented professionals in our area.

Downtime: I enjoy relaxing with my family and making new memories filled with laughter.

What really gets under my skin: Considering the magnitude of what we are facing with this COVID-19 pandemic, I’ve learned to take one day at time and don’t sweat the small things.

Success

What if success is to see how well you do what you can do in life. Let's go to the ant as Proverbs 6:6-11 suggest that we do and observe how she demonstrates her resolve to be successful:

having no guide, overseer, or ruler the ant provides her meat in the summer, and gathers her food in the harvest.

If you block an ant from going in one direction immediately the ant will turn and go in a different direction even if it means going over, around or under it doesn't matter the ant will persevere to accomplish her goal!

The ant demonstrates being successful means achieving your goals, plans, visions and seeking alternate routes when obstructions suddenly appear to be hindrances to your light at the end of the tunnel. Rest if you must, but don't quit!

Always remember you are unique and it is your birthright to determine what is important to you so define success according to what YOU are good at NOT what someone else is good at. Your gifts and desires are just that "YOURS" so enjoy what you can do without comparing it to what someone else can do.

Ask yourself:

  • What's truly important to me?
  • What are my true passions in life?
  • What lifestyle do I want to live?
  • What would I like to have written on my epitaph?

You are the only one that will see these answers so be honest and detailed and take off the "rose tinted glasses", because this is all about YOU!

Happiness

In 1776 America's Founding Fathers declared that we are endowed by our Creator with certain unalienable rights that among these are...the pursuit of happiness (The Declaration of Independence July 4, 1776).

244 years later happiness has become a science and psychologist are attempting to explain it and reason that it's necessary to experience a "good life". This sounds great but a "good life" to one individual maybe an adequate life to someone else. This simply means that seeking after happiness will vary from person to person allowing the highs and lows of the roller coaster of life to imprint various levels of contentment and pleasure on us for moments at a time. This tells us that happiness is not permanent which is why we have to pursue it.

Questions:

  1. What makes you happy?
  2. How often do you pursue after what makes you happy?

Examples:

  1. One woman finds happiness in running 10 miles everyday.
  2. One woman says she is happiest when researching telomeres.
  3. One man lives with his dog, enjoys a high salary, dates often and is very happy.
  4. One man's happiness is a thriving business in three different locations with plans on opening a fourth location.
