5 of 6 Dimensions of Wellness: Environmental Well-being

 Free Google Images:

Environmental health is a science that promotes well-being by identifying and evaluating environmental sources and hazardous agents such as but not limited to the following:

  • Radon in the air
  • Septic system inspections
  • Food contaminates
  • Climate change
We must create ways to limit exposure to hazardous, physical, chemical, and biological agents that are in the air, food, soil, and water by reducing pollution; reusing containers, bags, batteries; recycling paper, glass, aluminum, and plastics which all serve their purposes.

We must think about the new and exciting innovations of floating/vertical farms, brain wave passwords, coffee-powered cars, sweat powered smartwatches, living robots, AI (Artificial Intelligence), and disappearing buildings to assist with our environmental well-being? Are we improving the space that we have by building skyward until the buildings disappear into the clouds or the building reflect it's environment and you can't tell where the building begins and the environment ends? Do our food have more nutrients if less soil is used? So many questions! So many ideas!

If you begin to be proactive within your circle of influence regarding a concern for the greater good for us all chances are you will soon see a positive effect towards your concern for the greater good thus making you a certifiable change agent! Go ahead ~ get started and please believe that the environment appreciates you! I appreciate you! And a better future appreciates you for all that you do!

4 of 6 Dimensions of Wellness: Intellectual Well-being

Are you creative? Do you share your gift(s) with others? Are you a life long learner? Do you solve problems? Are you a critical thinker? Do you pursue your heart's interest? Are you open to new and different concepts? Do you try new things?

If you answered 'yes' to the above questions then you are on point to hit the target of intellectual well-being. On the other hand, if you answered 'no' to any of the above questions then try the below suggestions to step into your dimensions of intellectual well-being:

  • Teach an online course in your field of expertise, because there is someone somewhere that would love to know what you already know. Share the knowledge!
  • Learn a different language. In fact, learn two new languages!
  • Each month read a book on a subject you have no previous knowledge in or read 3 books to expand your current knowledge base.
Today's intention is to encourage you to engage in creative and mentally-stimulating activities that will allow you to expand your knowledge base. The above suggestions are limited in a vast world of intellectual opportunities. Therefore, seek out your interest and pursue it to the level of becoming an expert. Be it in academics, cultural involvement, community involvement, personal hobbies, traveling, politics, medicine, law, culinary arts, economist, information technology, agriculture, or a candle stick maker. It really doesn't matter what field your intellectual interest is in what matters is that you obtain the information and share the information in some capacity with others. Flex your intellectual muscles!

3 of 6 Dimensions of Wellness: Spiritual Well-being

What's your concept of being connected to "Something greater than yourself?" Recently, I heard myself say to a co-worker that I am a part of "Something greater than myself" not expecting to hear that his response was to repeat what I'd said: "Something greater than yourself" then he looked at me and simply replied "hmmn". Quickly, I said I have certain values, principles, purpose, morals, and beliefs that adds balance to my life and these concepts acts as guides for my life. Whenever, I feel off balanced I self-regulate, forgive myself and get back inline without feeling condemned". Looking at him I added "you probably have those same concepts that you live by, too; but you just call them something different".

Today, I ask that you seek value and meaning in your life experiences and to stop referring to your experiences as mistakes, because even the "mistakes" have value with lessons to be learned. Therefore, appreciate your life experiences, learn from them, then move on with the new found understanding that you will get another chance to demonstrate what you've learned regarding that situation so be ready to pass the next test.

Accept the concept that there is a reason for everything! If the same situation or same person or same type of person keep occurring in your life realize you are being taught a lesson that you have not yet embraced for deeper understanding of who you are. Stop. Listen. Analyze. Respond from a different perspective and live in the moment of your wisdom.

Write your feelings and emotions down on preferably paper, but your computerized devices may be used as well. Get those negative feelings and emotions out of you so that you are not internalizing negativity that you will only wrestle with over and over again that will cause you continuous pain and hurt.

Once those negative thoughts, feelings, and emotions have been ejected you can now allow the positive thoughts, emotions, and feelings to settle in so that the joys of life and of living in the moment resides in you. As you transcend from negative to positive you will begin to look and feel healthy, happy, successful, prosperous, and love! After all, don't you deserve to enjoy the best that life has to offer you in the freedom of positive spiritual, mental and physical well-being (Townsend, 2019)?

Lastly, take time for yourself to get quiet and listen to the silence from within of simply "being" to get in tuned to the Creator of all things! Ask and it shall be given to you, seek and you shall find, knock and it shall be opened, because everyone that ask will receive, he that seeks will find, and to him that knocks it shall be opened (Matthew 7:7-8, n.d.)

2 of 6 Dimensions of Wellness: Emotional Well-being

Unknown Artist

According to WHO (World Health Organization) being healthy is a state of physical, mental, and social well-being not merely the absence of dis-ease or infirmity and the basic to the happiness, harmonious relations and security of all peoples (World Health Organization, 2006).

Emotional health is knowing and acknowledging your feelings of happiness, anger, love, joy, fear, or sadness and then effectively controlling those emotions (Kitko, 2001) so that you are pro-active as opposed to re-active.

To enjoy positive emotional health it's recommended that you allow your body to rejuvenate and self-repair by sleeping. You know your body and the amount of sleep that you need in order that you feel refreshed and rested so do your body a favor and give it the necessary sleep that is required for you!

Also, follow the advice of the Greek physician, Hippocrates; and eat healthy foods allowing "food to be thy medicine, and let medicine be thy food" and then make sure you are not sedentary ~ go out there and move your body!

Next, have someone in your life that you can speak from your heart to without fear of judgment or exposing your weaknesses. Remember that it is okay to talk if you need someone to "hear you", but it is not okay to repress those feelings having those negative emotions to manifest themselves in other ways such as stroke, cancers, boils, ulcers and other illnesses.

Try finding the humor at whatever is causing your stress or seek expert health advisors to teach you how to manage the stress that is causing your anger. Talk with your employer's HR Department about their EAP program or consult with your local Department of Health and Human Services to get emotional well-being information that may be available to you in your area.

1 of 6 Dimensions of Wellness: Physical Wellness

Jamika Townsend
                                                                   Nathaniel Clark

Wellness is holistically forming components of physical, mental, and spiritual well-being when complete alignment is present (Stoewen, 2017). This alignment embodies wholeness fueling your body allowing your mind to become engaged while nurturing your soul.

To keep your body in excellent physical condition I'm encouraging physical activity to be adhered to on a regular basis. Physical activity can be as rigorous as your ability will allow or it can be as simple as taking the stairs instead of the elevator, practicing yoga, parking at the edge of the parking lot, or weight training. The choice and level of physical activity is yours!

In addition to that, please remember nutrition (food) is fuel for your body just as gasoline is fuel for your automobile. Therefore, select the best food possible for your body! You wouldn't put subpar gasoline into your automobile that will cause it to break down requiring costly repairs so why put junk food into your body causing it to breakdown requiring costly medication?

I know you are busy (so am I) just make your food choice priority begin eliminating processed foods, fast foods, chips, cakes, cookies, and sodas from your diet. Begin eating more fruit, vegetables, seafood, grains, vinegar based dressings, eggs, protein, legumes, and drink more water. Make your body's fuel Priority! Keep in mind less and better fuel intake combined with more exertion and drinking water equals weight control and depending on the exertion level possible weight loss!

Start slow and build which means if you haven't and/or can't walk up a flight of stairs don't try to jog up the street! Please make sure you protect yourself from unnecessary injuries by wearing proper gear for whatever activity you will begin participating in and by all means get a medical check-up prior to starting a rigorous exercise program.

Take Nike's advice and just do it!
